Disaster Services Training:

 

We train our Red Cross chapter volunteers to serve clients at local, regional, and national disasters.  Unless otherwise noted, there is no charge for any of these classes for disaster volunteers, but you must pre-register. A Course Schedule is listed at the bottom of this page. For more information or to register, contact Charles Vose at 978-922-2224 or cvose@northeastmassredcross.org . If you are interested in a course that is not currently scheduled, we can put you on a waiting list and contact you when it is available. Classes are offered at our Beverly location, as well as other regional locations. A map and directions can be found on our Contact Us page. 

 


 

Courses:

 

Introduction to Disaster Services, Online 
Course Length: approximately 45 minutes
Prerequisite: none
Description: This online course provides an overview of our history, mission, values, key services, 
organization structure, our commitments and other valuable information to give you background knowledge and understanding of the organization. This self-study course will introduce American Red Cross Disaster Services and allow you to discover how volunteers support this critical mission and to explore ways they can become involved in a local chapter. Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action
Course Length: 3 hours
Prerequisite: none
Description: This course introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of other local agencies to 
the role of the Red Cross in the community's actions in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters. The course will enable individual volunteers to translate their care and compassion for their community into action and provide information to other community agencies on Red Cross work and possible partnership in preparation for and response to a disaster.

 

Adult CPR/AED
Course Length: 4 1/2 hours
Certification: 1 year
Prerequisite: none
Description: In this course, you will learn how to properly identify and care for breathing, choking and cardiac emergencies in adults age 9 and older. You'll also learn when and how to use the emergency medical service (EMS) system, how to reduce disease transmission while providing care, and how to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This course combines lectures, demonstrations and video with hands-on training and practice. Note: Active Disaster volunteers may take this course at no cost. Please call 978-922-2224 to register. Client Casework

Course Length: 8 hours
Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action

Description: The course helps participants to develop interviewing skills, knowledge, attitudes, and relationships necessary to meet the disaster caused needs of individuals and their families. It will enable you to explain and provide Red Cross emergency disaster assistance to clients, use the basic forms and tools needed to assist clients, demonstrate the skills needed to perform a quality interview with a client, demonstrate appropriate use of resources and referrals, and describe the assignment setting in which emergency assistance interviews are performed.

Description: This short online course introduces the client caseworker to the new Client Assistance preloaded credit card that is given to clients for items such as food, clothing, bedding, etc.  The course shows the caseworker how to fill out the paperwork necessary to have the card activated.  This course must be setup in the Learning Management System  through the office.

Prerequisites: Fulfilling Our Mission... & Client Casework

Description: There are six (6) online segments to this course.  The first three segments provide information to the caseworker concerning CAS and the mechanics of using this web based system.  The last three are involved with Supervisor activities.  CAS is a website based form of the paper 901 form, (discussed during the Client Casework class), completed with the client in order to provide services.  More and more, caseworkers on deployment are using CAS rather than the paper 901.  CAS can be used with the client in a Service Center or by telephone if the client is unable to come to a Service Center.  In addition, all 901s filled out locally must be entered into the CAS online system .  This course must be setup in the Learning Management System through the office.

 

Defensive Driving, Online

Description: Learn valuable knowledge about defensive driving through the National Safety Council. This course is offered on-line at www.safetyserve.com/redcross/ . Disaster volunteers are eligible for an online discount...please e-mail if you have questions.

 

Disaster Assessment

Course Length: 3-4 hours
Prerequisites: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action, and Mass Care, (Client Casework is helpful) . Also, there is an online segment which must be completed prior to the classroom segment...please contact

Description: Provides an overview of the new and revised concepts, procedures, tools and resources contained in the recently released Disaster Assessment document. This workshop will enable chapter disaster leadership and Disaster Assessment workers to begin to incorporate these concepts into planning, training and response activities.

 

ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle) Driver/Operator Training (Local Only)
Prerequisites: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action, Mass Care, online Defensive Driving, current First Aid/CPR certification, valid driver's license with clean driving record (click for info), capacity to lift 50 pounds, and minimum age 21.

This class ( & prerequisites) qualifies a volunteer to drive and/or operate the NEMRC ERV locally.
Description: I
ntroduces participants to the exterior and interior operating parts of the Emergency Response Vehicle and will certify them to be a local ERV driver and/or operator upon successful completion of the road test. Enrollment is limited. Each participant must have completed the courses listed above, have current CPR and First Aid certificates, and submit a current certified 'True & Attested' Massachusetts RMV drivers' certificate to the ESD at least two weeks prior to taking the class.

FEMA: Introduction to Incident Command System, I-100, Online
Description: Introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). FEMA: National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction - IS-700, Online
Course Length: 3 hours
Description: Introduces the National Incident Command System (NIMS) explains the purpose, principles, key components and benefits of NIMS. The course also contains "Planning Activity" screens giving you an opportunity to complete some planning tasks during this course. The planning activity screens are printable so that you can use them after you complete the course.

First Aid Basics

Course Length: 4 hours
Certification: 3 years
Prerequisite: none
Description: In this course, you will learn how to properly identify and care for a variety of medical emergencies including: bleeding, shock, burns, fractures & sprains, seizures, poisoning, bites, stings, and heat & cold emergencies. This course combines lectures, demonstrations and video with hands-on training and practice.

Foundations of Disaster Mental Health
Course Length: 8 hours
Prerequisite: Mental health professional with a current state license.
Description: Prepares licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

 

Mass Care
Course Length: 3 hours
Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action
Description: Prepares participants to provide immediate and identifiable feeding and sheltering activities on a chapter-administered relief operation and to initiate those activities on larger relief operations.

 

Shelter Operations

Course Length: 4 hours
Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action and Mass Care.

Description: Prepares Red Cross and other agencies' staff to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team, to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of disaster.

 

Shelter Simulation
Course Length: 4 hours
Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action, Mass Care, and Shelter Operations.
